When a student is preparing to do an external internship for one of their capstone experiences for honors in the major, they should register for two courses; one must be for 0 s.h.

One of the two courses should be PSY:3996, usually for zero credits. A PBS faculty supervisor is needed for this. The student should register for this course under that supervisor’s section number.

For the other course, the student must register for one of the following internship courses: Internship in Liberal Arts and Sciences (CCP:1005), Academic Internship (CCP:1201), or the less commonly used options of HONR:3150 or HONR:3160.  See below for more details about those.

  • CCP:1005 Internship in Liberal Arts and Sciences (0 s.h.)
    • Requires approximately 10 s.h. a week
    • Ideal for situations in which for credit enrollment would mean additional cost (summers); enrolling in more than 18 s.h. for the student; or the student does not need to earn credits for the experience.

  • CCP:1201 Academic Internship (1-3 s.h.)
    • Requires 75 service hours per credit -  careers.uiowa.edu/pcc-academic-internship-course
    • Ideal for students who need to fulfill elective credit hours
    • Requires additional work including a journal of the experience and a reflective essay, though the essay required for honors in the major should be able to be used to satisfy the course essay requirement, as well.

  • HONR:3150 Honors Service Learning (1-3 s.h.)
    • Requires 3 hrs a week commitment per each 1 credit earned
    • Requires more active engagement of faculty through collaborative design of the internship/service project
    • If a student is interested in earning credits through this course, please refer to the Honors Program.
      • Student must be a member of the Honors Program; 2) Student must enroll under the faculty mentor in MyUI; 3) To earn honors credit the student will need to complete the reflection process which includes the pre-experience questionnaire, post-experience questionnaire, and narrative submission form. Questions should be directed to Andy Willard (andrew-willard@uiowa.edu ). Grading: A-F (honors credit will not be awarded if a non-passing grade is received)

  • HONR:3160 Honors Internship (0-3 s.h.)
    • Requires 3 hrs a week commitment per each 1 credit earned
    • Requires more active engagement of faculty through collaborative design of the internship/service project
