Non-Anthropocentric Psychology: What, Why, How

Carrie Figdore, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of Iowa

Abstract: In this talk I will introduce a fundamental shift going on in our understanding of psychological constructs -- the concepts (such as "decision-making", "liking", or "anticipating") that we use to talk about psychological capacities (such as decision-making, liking, or anticipating). The shift is away from anthropocentric ways of characterizing these traits and towards ways that take human versions of psychological capacities as special cases. I also explain the empirical motivations and methods behind the shift.
