Abstract: Driver distraction is more prevalent than ever and will only become more frequent and complicated as vehicle technology evolves. Past research demonstrates the significant costs of distraction to attention and performance, but there are a number of strategies for dealing with distraction in the vehicle. This presentation will discuss several approaches to mitigating distraction, focusing first on low-tech methods to improve joint situational awareness, and then on advanced vehicle safety systems. An overarching theme is the importance of understanding driver state on a moment-to-moment basis for effective countermeasures.
