ABSTRACT: I will describe a number of studies involving hypothetical and real infectious diseases where up to 66% of participants experienced a conflict between their beliefs and feelings of infection risk. These conflicts were associated with an increased desire to respond to the disease via behavioral or policy action, regardless of whether the actions were appropriate or not.
